UNDP trains DCEs in capacity building

Kumasi, July 18, GNA- A two-day training workshop designed to build the capacity, skills and knowledge of District Chief Executives (DCEs) opened in Kumasi on Friday. It is being sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under its Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Project in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Mrs. Christy Ahenkora-Banya, an official of the UNDP, said the workshop was aimed at making the DCEs and District Co-ordinating Directors to become abreast of their responsibilities to help them to appreciate local governance. She said DCEs played very important roles in the local government concept hence the need to upgrade themselves and get adequately informed for effective implementation of government policies and projects at the grass root.

Mrs. Ahenkora-Banya said as agents of change, DCEs needed to identify themselves with on-going development projects and be prepared to see those projects as their own, to ensure their sustenance. Mrs. Mary-Ann Addo of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, appealed to the DCEs to endeavour to work in close collaboration with stake holders in their communities, to identify their problems for prompt solutions to enable Ghana to achieve its development goals.
