Police reject GHC 500 bribe including three cows

Akwatia, June 23, GNA - Two members of a gang of four suspected to have stolen 10 cows from Mankesim in the Central Region and were transporting them to New Abirem in the Eastern Region were on Tuesday arrested by the Akwatia police and sent back to Mankesim. They are Tani Grushie, driver of a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number AS 2295 N, and his mate, Yaw Attah.

The two who together with two Fulani herdsmen, who vanished before they could be arrested, attempted to bribe four police personnel with GHC 500, two live cows and a dead one but the offer was rejected.

According to a police source, the four police personnel- Inspector Abraham Frempong, Sergeant Peter Okyere, Lance Corporal Dennis Kuda and Lance Corporal Helena Dogbatse - were on duty at a police barrier at the Saint Dominic Hospital staff village at Akwatia when they saw a speeding vehicle approaching the barrier and stopped it at about 0300 hours. When they asked them to produce papers covering the cow, the suspects pleaded with the police to let them proceed on the journey.

The source said the suspects then offered cash and cows to the police which was instantly rejected but just as the police were about to arrest them the two Fulanis held each others hand and vanished into thin air. The amazed police personnel then arrested the driver and his mate. When questioned, they admitted killing the cows belonging to Samaria Healing Centre at Mankesim and that they were conveying them to New Abirem in the Birim North District.

Based on that information, police sent the suspects to Mankesim where it was confirmed that the cows had been stolen from the town.
