Victorious Stars arrive from Sudan

Accra, June 21, GNA - Ghana's Victorious Black Stars arrived from Sudan on Sunday afternoon after chalking a convincing 2-0 victory over the Desert Hawks in their 2010 World Cup/African Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

The victory which was made possible by a Matthew Amoah brace saw the Stars maintain their clean sheet and hundred percent record that puts them in pole position to snatch the sole ticket allotted Group D.

The Stars contingent led by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Nortey Duah, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, members of the playing body and technical team touched down at the Kotoka International Airport off a Kenya Airways Plane around 12:15 local time.

The team was met on arrival by the acting Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Rashid Pelpuo, National Sport Council (NSC) Chief Executive Officer, Worlanyo Agrah and other officials of the GFA.

The Sports Minister congratulated the Stars for their spectacular performance which earned them the maximum points at the expense of their hosts at the Al-Merrikh Stadium in Omdurman, Sudan.

Mr Rashid Pelpuo assured that Government will fulfill all promises made towards ensuring qualification of the team for the first ever World Cup on African soil.

"Government will do our best to motivate you (Black Stars) and we expect you to give off your best in the remaining games. "There are three games left and our appeal is for you to give off your best to ensure a smooth passage to the World Cup," added Mr Pelpuo. On behalf of the team, Stars coach Milovan Rajevac commended all for the support towards the team during the campaign.

The Stars next play Sudan on September 9 at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra before engaging Benin and Mali on October 11 and November 14 respectively.

Only the top placed team will qualify for the World Cup in South Africa.
