US Medical Team in to provide free health care

Kumasi, June 2, GNA - A 15-member United States Medical Team arrived in the country on Monday to provide free health care and distribute over 200,000 dollars worth of medical supplies to selected deprived communities in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions. Additionally, they would organise training in Neonatal Resuscitation, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Emergency Response to Cardiac Arrest and other fields related to respiratory care for health professionals at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Martin Luther King Health Training School (MLHTS) in Accra. Professor Lisa Trujillo of the Weber State University and Founder of the Charity Beyond Borders, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO), is leading the team.

This is the fourth time in four years that they are visiting and they would be in Ghana for three weeks.

Prof Trujillo told the Ghana News Agency that they were happy to be associated with efforts at helping to improve health care delivery, particularly in deprived parts of the country. She said over the past three years her team had assisted to upgrade the professional skills of more than 1,500 Ghanaian health workers, including nurses, and midwives, given out freely 2,000 pairs of eye glasses after optical examination and donated assorted medical textbooks, computers and electronic devices.

Dr Owusu Achiaw Duah, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South and Director of MLHTS, through whose initiative the team is in the country, said interactions between the US and their Ghanaian health care counterparts had proven to be most beneficial. "Each year tighter bonds and new friendships are made, strengthening the momentum of this joint effort."
