District Assemblies urged to be accountable to the people

Nkawkaw (E/R), May 3, GNA - Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has called on District and Municipal Assemblies in the region to be accountable to the people.

Mr Ofosu Ampofo, who was addressing the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly, urged members to use available resources to provide the needed infrastructure to enhance the living standard of the communities. He said the country could not develop without all 170 assemblies making judicious use of their common fund and internally generated revenue.

The Assembly confirmed Mr Alex Obeng Somuah, a 47-year-old lecturer at University of Cape Coast, as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). All 25 assembly members present voted for Mr Somuah. Mr Ofosu-Ampofo advised Mr Somuah to make effective use of the Assembly's common fund and internally generated revenue. He said Chief Executives had significant role to play in the country's democratic dispensation and advised the assembly members to bury their partisan interests and unite for the development of the municipality.

The Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw, Mr Seth Adjei-Baah, called on the assembly members to give the new MCE the needed support and co-operation to help develop the municipality. Mr Somuah thanked the assembly members and the President for the confident reposed in him and called for the needed support and assistance to enhance development in the Municipality. In a related development, the Kwahu East District Assembly confirmed the President's nominee, Mr Samuel Asamoah for the post of District Chief Executive. He got 20 out of the 25 votes cast at an emergency meeting of the Assembly at Abetifi. Mr Asamoah failed to obtain the two-thirds vote required in the first election held 10 days earlier. In his acceptance speech, Mr Asamoah, a 44-year-old Science Tutor at the Abetifi Presbyterian Senior High school, thanked the assembly members and the President for the confidence reposed in him and called for cooperation and support from all stakeholders in the district.
