Eastern Regional Police Command denies press report

Koforidua, April 22, GNA - The Eastern Regional Police Command has denied media reports that the Effiduase Police near Koforidua subjected a 96 year old woman to severe interrogation and beating resulting in her death.

This was contained in a press release by the Regional Police Command and signed by Chief Inspector Christopher Tawiah, Police Public Relations Officer.

According to the release, a 96 year-old woman was reported missing, by her family to the Koforidua Railways Police on Tuesday, April 13, 2009.

While the police was investigating the issue, one Osei Karikari reported to the Effiduase Police that an old woman was sitting on a plot of land at Abrewa-Nkwanta, near Koforidua. The release said when the police got to the scene; they found the woman who was in her 90s, half naked, weak and partially paralyzed lying down.

According to the release, while the police was conveying her to the Koforidua Regional Hospital, she passed away. The body has since been deposited at the Koforidua Regional Hospital morgue, while investigations continue. The Eastern Regional Police Command assured the public of its readiness to live up to its ethics of protecting life and property, and advice the public to co-operate with them.
