Passion Week, Easter, corner stone of Christianity

Accra, April 5, GNA - Mr Eric Owiredu-Dwamena, Presbyter at the Asylum Down Presbyterian Church, on Sunday appealed to Christians to be actively involved in Passion Week and Easter celebrations since those events marked the cornerstone of Christianity.

Passion Week is observed worldwide by Christians a week before Easter Sunday. The week is used to remember the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Mr Owiredu-Dwamena was preaching at the Palm Sunday service on the theme: "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord." Palm Sunday is celebrated worldwide to mark the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

He said Christians should not be passive observers of the Passion Week and Easter celebrations but should see it as a period to help them reflect on their Christian lifestyles.

"We need to put our whole trust in God and also be humble," he said and added that Jesus Christ showed as example of humility when he rode on the colt even though he had an option to ride on a horse. Mr Owiredu-Dwamena said being humble as Christians did not mean that we should be timid, saying, "Humility does not mean timidity." He also urged Christians to show compassion to their fellow human beings and said Jesus Christ was compassionate that is why he accepted to die for our sins.

Members of the church, holding palm fronds, held a procession through the streets of Asylum Down before the church service amidst singing, drumming and dancing. The church also used the occasion for a health screening exercise where members where checked for Hepatitis B and given vaccinations where necessary.
