Private tertiary institutions asked to design development-oriented courses

Pomadze (C/R), Feb. 20, GNA - Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, has urged private tertiary institutions to design courses that would be relevant to the socio-economic development of the nation. He has also asked the institutions to equip their students with employable skills.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw was speaking at the first matriculation ceremony for 287 students, made up of 192 males and 95 females of the Pan-African Christian University College at Pomadze near Winneba. He asked students in private tertiary institutions not to consider themselves as inferior but to learn hard to enable them to acquire qualifications and skills needed on the labour market.

Bishop Dr. David Ofori-Adu, President of the University College, said it was the aim of the institution to train students to acquire both academic excellence and moral uprightness. Mr. Richard Kwadwo Adjei, Senior Assistant Secretary of the National Accreditation Board (NAB), said the Board was making efforts to ensure that credible private tertiary institutions were accredited. He asked the institutions to design relevant programmes to meet the socio-economic needs of the country.

Mr. Adjei advised students to ascertain the authenticity of accreditation certificates of the institutions before accepting their admissions. Bishop Ephraim Shawa, the Superintendent Minister of the Church of God West Africa, urged the University College to turn out graduates with moral uprightness to help advance the cause of humanity.
