Court remands farmer for illegal possession of "wee"

Nsawam, Feb. 18, GNA - The Nsawam District Magistrate Court on Tuesday reminded Kwasi Avatola a 39-year-old farmer of Pakro near Nsawam in the Akwapem South Municipality for possessing a quantity of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Avatola whose plea was not taken has been reminded into prison custody at Nsawam to reappear on March 12, 2009 Prosecuting, Police Inspector Anthony Oppong told the court, presided over by Justice Joseph Wilberforce Mensah that Police had a tip-off of the operations of the accused person dealing in narcotic drugs and had also cultivated an Indian hemp farm at Pakro. The Prosecution said Supt. Daniel Asare Nyampong, Nsawam District Police Commander led a team of police personnel to the town and arrested Avatola and when his room was searched, some dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp were found.

Inspector Oppong, the prosecutor said during upon interrogation, the accused admitted cultivating Indian hemp for the past three years at the banks of rivers Densu and Popon. Meanwhile the police have destroyed the farms and investigations still continue.
