Street Academy organises 'needy night'

Accra, Dec. 21, GNA - Management of Street Academy at the week-end held its annual Needy and Less Fortunate Children Mentor evening in Accra to raise funds for its operations. The Academy specialises in adopting needy children in society and training them to realise their full potentials in life. Mrs Nina Ashietey, Child's Rights Advocate called on philanthropists in society to adopt at least a needy child and train him or her to become a responsible citizen. She said streetism exposed innocent children to several vices that society frowned upon and through such assistance they could be taken out from the streets and the vices minimised.

Mrs Ashietey called on corporate institutions and organisations to channel some of their budgets on organising beauty pageant and other contests to support the needy in society. Mr Ataa Lartey, Director of the Academy said it had secured 54,000 pounds in grant from foreign partners to build a new structure for the children. He said while some of the inmates were practising various vocations, the rest were at various levels of education in the country. The Academy annually adopts 93 children. 21 Dec. 08
