NPP/NDC supporters clash in Brong-Ahafo

Sunyani, Sept 22, GNA - Six persons including a police officer sustained injuries at the weekend during a clash between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Party (NDC) at Berekum.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Seth Charles Oteng, Regional Police Commander told the Ghana News Agency on Monday the clash occurred on Sunday at about 1800 hours when, after the inauguration of an NPP youth wing, the members went on a procession through some principal streets of Berekum.

He said NDC supporters who were returning home after a football match at Osenase near Berekum were stopped by the police from using the same route that the NPP youth were using but they ignored the warning and went ahead in their pickup vehicle and motor bikes. The two sides suddenly attacked each other with sachet water and stones some of which hit and seriously wounded the six persons including Assistant Superintendent of Police Charles Koosono, Berekum Municipal Commander.

He said the victims were taken to hospital in Berekum where two of them including the police commander were treated and discharged but the other four were admitted.

The situation got out of hand and the police had to call for reinforcement from Sunyani before the situation was brought under control.

Mr Oteng said calm had been restored due to the heavy security presence but no arrests had been made and the police were still investigating.

There was a clash between supporters of the two parties at Sankore in Asunafo South District where bill boards of both parties were destroyed.

Mr Oteng said an NDC supporter identified as Kofi Okyere received cutlass wounds and is on admission at the government hospital in Goaso following an assault on one Kwaku Sekyere, an NPP supporter at Bonkron village near Sankore by NDC supporters. He said the victim on his return informed his people about his ordeal who also destroyed two bill boards of the NDC resulting in the clash.
