CJA To Defy Court Order To Demonstrate

The Northern Regional Police Command has cautioned the Committee for Joint Action (CJA) or any group of persons or individuals with the intention of embarking on a demonstration on January 12, 2008 to refrain from it or face the full rigours of the law. The CJA had notified the Regional police command of its intention to stage a demonstration in Tamale since last month in Accordance with the Public Order Act but the police say they do not have the personnel to protect the demonstrators among other reasons.

In view of this development, the police had sought an injunction from the Tamale circuit court to restrain the pressure group from embarking on their intended demonstration but the CJA would not budge. In an interview, a leading member of the CJA, Kwesi Pratt said the group had not received any court injunction and would therefore go ahead with the demonstration.

Another leading member, Benard Morna declared “ I want to state loud and clear that we of the committee for Joint Action are not going to allow extension of our government, the NPP to undermine our forward match to ensure justice is done to the people of Ghana”. He continued, “if the police service have become a wing of the NPP we will treat them as a political wing”.

Meanwhile another group calling itself Progressive Action Group of Tamale has vowed to counter the CJA demonstration.

At the time of filing this report, the Northern regional police command was engaged in a marathon meeting with regards to handling the situation with utmost caution.
