Ghana Will Burn, If NPP Retains Power

THE OPPOSITION National Democratic Congress (NDC) has given a strong indication of its unwillingness to accept results of election 2008 if it does not go their way.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Nana Ohene Agyekum emphatically stated that the country will burn to ashes should the ruling party retain power in next year’s election.

Addressing party supporters at a constituency delegates’ conference in Obuasi, the former Ashanti Regional Minister categorically stated that election 2008 would never be free and fair.

He therefore charged NDC supporters to start bracing themselves up for a possible showdown next year because, as he put it, the party would not allow another rigging to determine the next President and government of the country as happened in 2004.

Mr Ohene Agyekum said Professor John Evans Atta Mills disappointed the NDC in 2004 when he conceded defeat, as credible information on the ground proved that the election was rigged in favour of the NPP.

“This time around, the party will not allow Prof. Mills to concede defeat,” he declared.

The NDC Regional Chairman disclosed that the party would compile its own results and make a declaration without awaiting the verdict of the constitutionally mandated body, the Electoral Commission.

Mr. Agyekum averred that the implementation of ROPAL would spearhead the burning of the country because the party would never ever accept election results from overseas.

According to him, the NPP, apart from election 2000 which it won genuinely, can never win an election in the country if elections are conducted in a free and fair manner.

He claimed the NPP intends rigging next year’s election with the support of the community police and state security.

He consequently entreated party supporters to be fearless on the day of elections and be bold enough to resist intimidation from any quarter.

“Victory is staring at us and nothing can make it elude us so stand up and fight for the NDC,” he told the enthusiastic supporters.

The Chairman asked party supporters to see next year’s election as a “do and die” affair because according to him, defeat could kill their great party.

He said the formation of groups in various areas is critical if the party is to squarely match the might of government machinery that would be working in favour of the ruling party during the elections.

Mr. Agyekum commended the Obuasi branch of the party for forming the “Ackada boys” group with the primary aim of defending the interest of the party at all times, particularly during election 2008.

He stated that with the “Ackada boys” and “Azorka boys” in existence, the party’s ballots in 2008 could be safeguarded.

The NDC Regional Chairman as well urged women supporters of the party to join such groups, stating that the battle ahead required the collaborative efforts of all.
