Adumasa threaten to boycott 2008 elections

Suhum (E'R), Dec. 16, GNA - The people of Adumasa, a farming community near Suhum in the Eastern Region has threatened to boycott the 2008 general elections if their five-kilometre feeder road from Tetteh Nkwanta through Ayitey to Adumasa is not rehabilitated.

The Odikro of Adumasa, Baffour Kwaku Addo, who made this known to the Ghana News Agency(GNA) at a communal labour organized to weed the areas along the road said this is the fourth time the people had appealed to the District Assembly and the government to rehabilitate the road, but they have not received any response.

According to Baffour Addo Kwaku, an elder of the village, the road was constructed by one Mr. Hafter, a German whose wife's parents had a cottage at Adumasa and that, Mr Hafter constructed five bridges and culverts on the road single handedly in 1985. Since then, no rehabilitation work had been done on the road despite several appeals. He said at present, chain saw operators had taken advantage of the bad nature of the road to destroy the forest with impunity. Baffour Addo Kwaku said at the moment, sick persons were carried in wheelbarrows to Ayitey, a nearby village before boarding a vehicle to Suhum or Koforidua for medical treatment.

He added that the youth, who are mostly farmers are leaving the area to urban areas and relegating farming activities to the background.
