Nkwata Hospital theatre named after Prof Quartey

Nkwanta (V/R), Nov. 28, GNA - The Nkwanta District Hospital has a new theatre complex named after the late Professor J.M.K. Quartey, a renowned urologist and past team leader of Operation Ghana Medical Mission (OGMM).

Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Nkwanta District Director of Health Services announced this when a 12-member OGMM team, led by Professor Hector Addo, a dermatologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, visited the area.

Members of the team were on a five-day outreach programme during which they provided specialist health care to the communities. Dr. Awoonor-Williams said the complex had been named after the late Prof. Quartey for his immense contribution towards the development of the hospital.

Prof Quartey and three others died in a car crash while returning from a similar outreach in the Brong Ahafo region two years ago. Dr Awoonor-Williams said the OGMM outreach programme in the Nkwanta district was the brainchild of the Prof. Quartey, adding that the team since 1998 had carried out 14 outreach programmes in the area. During the five-day programme, the team undertook 48 surgical cases such as vaginal fistula repair, thyroidectomy, tumours, orthopaedic and gynaecological cases.
