Fund raising dinner to support past heroines

Accra, Nov 27, GNA - G.W. Amarteifio Endowment Fund is to organize and launch a major fund raising event on Saturday, December 1 to support and care for past sports heroes and heroines who have been living lives of destitutes because of neglect.

The event is being organized in collaboration with the Old Sportsmen and Sportswomen Association of Ghana (OSSAG) with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MoESS) and the Ministry of Information and National Orientation and in conjunction with DigiVision Productions.

A statement issued by Grace Brookman-Abraham, an official of DigiVision Productions copied to the GNA Sports said the main highlight of the Fund will be the premiere of a documentary titled "Our Forgotten Sports Heroes" which reflects on the contributions of sports to national development.

The documentary which is put together by DigiVision Productions, also reflects on the sad stories of some past heroes and heroines who have been left to anguish in conditions of need and ill-health. The statement added that contribution from sponsors and charitable individuals and organizations at the event will be used to support the G.W Amarteifio Endowment Fund which seeks to care for old and former national sports and women.

Mr Amarkai Amarteifio, Chairman of the Endowment Fund said "we use the event as an occasion to reflect on what we consider to be a national shame and call for action to mitigate their condition". He added that "The celebration of Ghana's 50th independence anniversary affords us the opportunity to reflect on the role and contributions of our past sports personalities to the development of the country".

Prof. Linus Abraham, Director of the documentary and Dean of the African University College of Communications said "we have all greatly, directly or indirectly benefited from the entertainment, joy and sense of national pride that the past sports personalities brought to us as they competed on the national and international scenes to build the reputation of the nation".

The statement said the contributions from sponsors and charitable individuals and organizations at the event would go towards supporting the Endowment Fund in its work of caring for old and former national sports men and women.

Items would be auctioned and copies of the documentary film will also be on sale in aid of the Fund while viewers will have the opportunity to text messages during the screening of the documentary on television to donate in support of the Fund
