EDITORIAL: The Roads Are Spoiling!

Who is in Charge?

As we grapple with the floods in the north, there is another rain related problem which if not immediately addressed could lead to huge losses to the state. We are here referring to the conditions of our roads, especially those in the big towns with heavy vehicular traffic.

In Accra, the national capital, potholes have developed in many roads and with each rain they widen more. The very important Spintex Road for example, is destroyed in many parts. Many other roads in the city are in similar or worse conditions. Part we agree is due to mediocre construction, but even more importantly, the lack of maintenance worsens the condition of the roads.

The question is: who is in charge? Obviously government officials, senior civil/public servants - those paid by public funds to run our country - ply these roads and see and experience the poor condition in which they are, but do nothing about it.

If urgent repair works are not done immediately, in a few months time, so many roads within our cities would be so damaged as to require reconstruction...

...And where would the money come from?
