Relief Items for Flood Victims

Sandema (U/E), Sept 14, GNA - Mrs. Agnes Chigabatia, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, on Thursday distributed relief items to flood victims in three camps housing internally displaced persons in Sandema. The camps are Sandema Preparatory, the Ayieta Continuation and Sandema Local Authority schools.

The Deputy Minister's participation in the distribution followed strict instructions from President John Agyekum Kufuor, during his two-day visit to the region that regional ministers should ensure that the items reached true victims of the disaster.

The victims received mats, towels, rice, millet, gari, maize, cooking oil, sugar, plastic cups and used clothing. Mrs. Chigabatia, the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, reiterated government's commitment to ensure that measures were taken to relieve them of the suffering.

She said even though the items could not solve all their needs, it would help lessen their plight and promised that as more relief comes to the region, she would not hesitate to send them their share. Heavy rains and the opening of the spillway of a dam by neighbouring Burkina Faso resulted in floods that caused widespread destruction in northern part of Ghana.

Eight people died, 4,544 houses damaged and 16,392 people displaced.
