Aliu "loyalists" call for clean campaign

Tamale, Sept. 12, GNA - A group calling itself the 'Loyalists of Aliu Mahama' has appealed to presidential aspirants of the NPP to run their campaigns devoid of insults and acrimony.

In a statement signed by its president, Mr. El-Hassan Umar, the group expressed confidence in the Party's democratic process saying it would remain united after national primaries in December, when delegates are expected to choose a common candidate for elections next year. The group said even though it expects the NPP presidential race to be very competitive, considering the number of the candidates, it was optimistic that Alhaji Mahama would win.

"We are expecting a landslide victory for Alhaji Mahama because the response to our campaign is excellent and the support base keeps expanding in all the 230 constituencies," the statement said. The statement said the Danquah/Busia tradition would be making history by presenting its first Northern presidential candidate, adding: "We must prove to the whole world that our Party has a national outlook by unanimously endorsing Alhaji Mahama's bid to become President of the Republic of Ghana in January, 2009".
