GJA Donations

Accra, Aug. 15, GNA - Three institutions, including Ghana News Agency (GNA), on Wednesday donated a total of GH=A25,000 towards the 12th edition of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards slated for Saturday, August 18.

Mr Felix Forson, Administrative Manager of GNA, presenting a cheque for GH=A21,000, said the Agency recognized the important contribution of journalists towards the country's development. Ms Jane Yeboah, Senior Public Affairs Director of Ghana Cocoa Board, presented a cheque for GH=A23,000, which included a corporate table for the Board.

She said the Board recognized the important role the media had played over the years, especially regarding the activities of the Board. Ms Yeboah said GH=A2 2,000 covered the cost of a laptop, plaque and certificate for the best journalist (Print category) while GH=A2 1,000 was for the corporate table.

Mr Charles Oduro, Manager of KEK Insurance Brokers, presented a cheque for GH=A2 1,000 towards the awards. Mr Ransford Tetteh, President of GJA, lauded the contribution of corporate Ghana towards the achievement of media freedom and said this was not for journalists alone.

"Media freedom is the right for everyone to have access to information as well as expressing your opinions. This is why the frontiers have been expanded to allow you to contribute through text messaging and other phone-in programmes."

He said to help the media, especially the state-owned media, to develop, corporate Ghana needed to give media houses advertisements to help them generate income for expansion. Mr Tetteh urged journalists not to abuse the freedom but practice responsible journalism where the side of the other party was heard to ensure probity and accountability. 15 Aug. 07
