AngloGold wins business award

Accra, Aug.4, GNA- AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), on Friday received this year's Global Business Coalition's (GBC) Award for Business Excellence on Malaria at its Annual Awards Gala in New York.

Mr. Bobby Godsell, Chief Executive Officer of AngloGold Ashanti said his organisation has been identified by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as a global example of excellence in the private sector's response to these three pandemics. Dr. Brian Chicksen, AGA Corporate Head of Health Services presented the award to the Obuasi Malaria Control Centre at a colourful ceremony attended by Dr. Pieter Van Wyk, AGA Health Services Manager for Africa. Also at the ceremony were Dr. Cristoram Barbosa, Manager in charge of occupational health, South American Region; Professor ENL Browne, head of Community Health Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi and other medical personnel from the company's hospital and the Municipal Assembly.

Dr. Chicksen commended the centre for their collective effort and asked the workers to emulate the example to move the company forward. Mr. Steve Knowles, Malaria Control Manager of AngloGold, who received the award, said teamwork and dedication to duty had given the company the honour for the reduction of Malaria cases at the hospitals from 6,000 to 2,000, saying, it was a great achievement of their collective efforts.

He said a spraying exercise to help reduce malaria incidence in the municipality would begin soon and lauded the community for accepting the programme.

Dr. Pieter Van Wyk, AGA Health Services Manager for Africa, said the external audit report showed that the centre scored 94% above the compliance level of 80%.
