U.S. Embassy to open a new American Corner

Accra, 16 May, GNA - The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday said it was preparing to open an "American Corner" on the premises of the Ghana Library Board in June.

The Corner would serve as a resource centre for materials on U.S. history, culture and politics. It will include computers with internet connectivity as well as regular schedule programming and education advice.

Mr Chris Hodges, Director of the Centre, said this when he donated books and materials worth 30,000 dollars to 12 institutions in Accra. According to him this would be the second American Corner after the Tamale American Corner, named the Ghana-U.S. Resource Centre. He said the Embassy was working towards a factual and information-base centre that would meet the needs of society. Mr Hodges said the information resource centre would enable students and the general public to have access a wide range of current reference materials and a state of the art electronic database that would add up to their knowledge.

He said the donation would strengthen the bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Ghana.

The beneficiaries included the Ghana Library Board, Africa Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), Ghana School of Law and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nana Essilfie Kondua, Director of Studies of AIJC, lauding the effort of the Embassy, said he was thankful for the effort of the Embassy in reaching out to the various institutions.
