Invigilation allowances to teachers paid

Accra, April 17, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) on Tuesday said it had fully paid all allowances for teachers who invigilated examinations in 2005 and 2006 and asked any teacher who had genuine claim of non-payment to bring this to the notice of the Director of Secondary Education through his/her head for immediate redress.

A statement signed in Accra by Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, Director-General of GES, said the Service was happy that the leadership of the National Association of Graduate Teachers had advised their members to rescind their decision to boycott the 2007 West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

NAGRAT members had complained about non-payment of invigilation allowance for 2005 and 2006 and non-payment of October 2006 salary of members who stayed out of the classroom during that month. GES said it was assuring candidates, parents and the general public that concrete steps had been taken to ensure a smooth conduct of the examinations.

"Heads of Second Cycle Schools have been instructed to take measures to ensure that the examinations are not disrupted for any reason," the statement said. GES asked Regional and District Directors of Education to liaise with the heads of schools to forestall any lapses in the conduct of the examinations.

"Management wishes to stress that it recognizes the invaluable contribution of the teachers to the progress of this nation and it will do all it can within the limits of its power to improve the conditions of service of all teachers," it said.
