Bomb threat on South African Airline flight

Accra, April 17, GNA - A South African Airline flight that arrived last night at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) was held down well for over an hour beyond its departure time by security personnel, following a reported bomb threat while the plane was on its way to Accra.

Sources at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) told the Ghana News Agency that the bomb threat, however, turned out to be a hoax. The sources said while the plane was on its way to Ghana from South Africa, a female passenger who went to the washroom after three young men had come out, became suspicious of them.

She reported her suspicions of the three and a search was carried out in the washroom where an inscription that there was a bomb under seat number 51A on the aircraft was discovered.

The sources said the pilot spoke to SAA and airport officials in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a decision was taken that the flight should proceed to the KIA.

Security agencies, the Fire Service and other emergency units were on hand in case of any unforeseen developments when the flight landed. There were, however, no incidents.

The three suspects have been taken in for questioning while the aircraft has since made its departure trip back to South Africa.
