Migration made Kumasi lose its glory

Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister designate vetted
Accra, Dec. 7, GNA - Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, who has been nominated by President John Agyekum Kufuor as the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, on Wednesday said unbridled migration to Kumasi had contributed to the loss of the glory of the Metropolis as the Garden City.

He said there was pressure on the land, which was limited and the situation had led to the destruction of the environment. Mr Antwi said these when he appeared before the Appointment Committee of Parliament to be vetted.

In response to a question that the Government had not done much for the Ashanti Region, he said it was regrettable that the developments taking place in the Region had not been noticed because of the delay in the completion of the Asafo interchange.

Mr Antwi said there were pieces of evidence of development in various sectors including that of education and health.

He mentioned in particular developments taking place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the Kumasi Polytechnic and some basic schools across the Region.
In response to another question that towns such as Konongo in the Region had not seen any development resulting in the lowering of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flags and the hoisting of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flags as a form of protest against the Government, he said every administrative district was receiving its fair of projects. He said he was going to assist the Regional Minister to monitor all ongoing projects in the Region to ensure that development cuts across. On his personal contributions to see to the solution of the seeming conflict between Members of Parliament and District Chief Executives, Mr Antwi said he would assist the Regional Minister, himself an MP, and one time District Chief Executive to deal with the situation.
Meanwhile, Parliament has paid glowing tribute to the memory of the late Nii Adjei Boye Sekan, Former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku Constituency and Alhaji Basit Abdulai Fuseini, Former Northern Regional Minister.
