NRC compensation beneficiary complains of cheating

Nkawkaw (E/R), Nov. 24, GNA - Madam Victoria Asor-Bamfo, a beneficiary of the financial compensation recommended by the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), has complained of cheating by the officials directed by the Attorney General's Department to handle the payments to the beneficiaries at Koforidua.

Madam Asor-Bamfo, 71, told the Ghana News Agency that, when she went to Koforidua on November 22, 2006 to collect her compensation from official of the AG's Department, she saw 30 million cedis compensation written against her name and that was confirmed by the three officials present but was made to sign against five million cedis.

She said she protested but the officials threw the five million cedis at her and left since she was the last person to be served. Madam Asor-Bamfo said the officials said other victims were given between one million and two million cedis and she was therefore fortunate to have received five million cedis.

She said she later made an official report to the Kwahu West District Chief Executive, Nana Kofi Kese who gave her a letter to be sent to the AG and the Eastern Regional Co-ordinating Council (ERCC) at Koforidua.

Madam Asor-Bamfo, now unemployed said she appeared before the NRC in Accra two years ago to complain about the atrocities meted out to her by soldiers and police personnel during the 1979 revolution. She said soldiers and police officials led by one Inspector Nyame from Mpraeso Police Station assaulted her, took away her gold bar, huge sums of money and other personal effects including clothing. 24 Nov. 06
