Geological Study of Nkwanta Area Underway

Nkwanta (V/R), Nov. 21, GNA - A geological baseline study funded by the European Union under the Mining Sector Support programme has taken off at Nkwanta in the Volta Region.

The study, expected to end in April next year, is being undertaken by the Council for Geosciences (CGS) of South Africa, Geological Survey of France, Geological Survey of Ghana, as well as other partners. Dr Thomas Fullgraf, Chief Geologist, who is leading a 34-man team of experts and logistics Officers told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that the study, which would cover 75 km by 60 km square of land space, stretching to Krachi East and Kadjebi districts, would focus on geophysics, geochemistry, geological mapping and hydrogeology. He said about 4,000 soil samples would be analysed. Dr Fullgraf observed that the success of the study, which would offer employment to the local people, would depend on total cooperation of the communities within the study area.
