Mining company inaugurates resettlement

Wassa Akyempim (W/R), Oct 28, GNA 96 A new settlement for Wassa Akosombo community made up of 52 households was inaugurated at Wassa Akyempim in the Mpohor Wassa East District of the Western region. The community was originally located too close to the tailings dam of Golden Star (Wassa) Limited (GSWL), a mining company based at Wassa Akyempim, hence the decision by the company to relocate the community. Inaugurating it, Mr Anthony Evans Amoah, Western Regional Minister, appealed to the chiefs and people in the area to use dialogue instead of demonstration to address their problems.

He said the district needed investors and such behaviour would only scare away investors.

Mr Amoah said electric wires were ready for hooking the community to the national grid. He commended the chiefs for releasing 60,000 acres of land for the Mine to embark on large scale oil palm cultivation. Mr Edward Tawiah Amprofi, Mpohor Wassa East District Chief Executive, urged the youth to embrace the oil palm cultivation programme.

Nana Kobina Andoh, acting divisional chief of Mamponso told the people to see the mine as a partner in development but not as an enemy and therefore both the communities and the Mine should work in concert to develop the area. He told the residents to constantly clean the new place to maintain its beauty.
