Consultants at Korle-Bu on strike

Accra, Sept. 28 GNA - About 120 Supervising Consultants offering essential services at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have since September 15, 2006, embarked on strike to demand better conditions of service. The industrial action by the Consultants comprising Lecturers at the country's premier Medical School and supervisors of young medical graduates has affected medical services especially at the maternity block.

Mr Mustapha Salifu, Public Relations Officer of the Hospital, who confirmed the industrial action to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday, said the workers had laid down their tools in demand for additional duty hour allowances.

He said the agitations of the Consultants for enhanced allowances started in January 2006 but unfortunately the Hospital had not been able to meet their demands.

Mr Salifu said the Hospital authorities had met with the striking medical personnel to return to post while their grievances were being addressed.

He said after the meeting a few Consultants returned to post.
