District level elections record impressive turnout in Wa

Wa, Sept 26, GNA - Long queues of voters were recorded at most of the polling stations in the Wa Municipality, when voting started this morning, in sharp contrast to previous district level elections held in the municipality.

Most of the people, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency during its rounds, attributed the high turnout to the enthusiasm generated by the candidates during their campaigns and the wide publicity given the elections by the electoral commission and civil society organizations. At the Environmental Health "B" Polling Station at Kabanye Electoral Area, 156 out of 582 registered voters had cast their ballots as at ten o clock, while at its adjacent Environmental Health "A" Polling Station 160 had voted at that time.

At the Zongo daily market polling station in the Zongo Electoral Area, 133 people had voted out of a voting population of 584. Dondoli Electoral Area, which witnessed a very acrimonious campaign in the run-up to the elections, registered the longest queues in the Municipality and as at 1030hours, 235 voters had cast their ballot at Dondoli "A" polling station, 183 at Dondoli "B", 202 at Dondoli market and 190 at the Ahamadiyya Nursery polling station in the same electoral area.

Out of 399 voters at the Women's Training Institute polling station in the Government Residential Electoral Area, 88 voters had cast their ballots as at 1000hours.

The turnout recorded a similar trend in almost all the polling stations visited by the GNA.

All the Candidates had agents except at the Zongo daily market polling station, where a physically challenged candidate, Mr Mumuni Tia had no one representing him.

None of the polling stations visited so far had complained of any shortage of voting materials and no ugly incident has been recorded since the exercise began.
