Educate the young ones for a better future - Dr. Awuah

Accra, Sept. 16, GNA - Dr. Patrick Awuah, President of Ashesi University on Saturday said education was the key for building every nation and there was therefore the need to give children a solid foundation in education.

He said learning could be very rewarding and so children should do their best through hard work as well as to have fun. Dr. Awuah was speaking at the 17th Speech and Prize Giving Day of students of the Golden Sunbeam School in Accra, which was under the theme: "The use of information communication technology in basic education and the way forward."

He said no one thought there could be a moving car without a driver but a student in Ashesi University had done it and so the children could do what they think it was impossible to do if they worked hard.

Dr. Awuah, who officially opened a Computer Laboratory for the school said: "I can see excellence in Golden Sunbeam and so take the opportunity."

He said students from Golden Sunbeam in his University were doing very well academically, with some wining scholarships. He urged the students to always choose right since the motto of the school is "Choose Right".

Togbi Kporku III, an Engineering Consultant, who chaired the occasion said the performance of the children indicated that they were not only being educated in the mind but also in the body and soul. He said parents should thank teachers who helped to train their children rather than raining insults on them for caning their children to correct them.

Togbi Kporku III urged the students to take advantage of the facilities available in the school to learn more and promised to sponsor the awards of three best students who excelled in Maths, Physics and Chemistry for as long as he could. Mr. Ohene Opare, the Director of Golden Sunbeam School urged the graduands to continue to be successful and become the leaders they have been trained to be.

He presented each graduand with a book entitled:"Worlds of Change" and said it will help them adjust to the new environment they were moving into.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, he said, in order to make use of the President's Special Initiative on Distant Learning, the school has purchased recorded Compact Discs from the Ministry of Education to help the students practice what they have been thought in class. Prizes were awarded to students who excelled academically and to those with good behaviour.
