‘My Life Is In Danger’

Grace Asibi, the girlfriend of suspected fugitive drug baron, Gerardo David Vasquez Duarte, yesterday went haywire over her frozen assets and bank accounts, accusing government of putting her life in “dangerous.” “They have put my life in dangerous,” she said in reaction to the freezing of her accounts by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).

An apparently furious Grace could not understand why she of all people should be treated this way and why this time. She argued that the East Legon cocaine incident took place since November last year and if there was the need for her assets to be frozen, it should have taken place in November, not now. Asibi made these assertions in an interview with a Tema-based radio station yesterday.

According to her, the Police had branded her an informant, thereby making people mistrust her; a situation which she said was endangering her life. She maintained that it was on account of this that government had given her protection. According to her, when the case first cropped up, she was outside the country and argued that if she were actually involved, she would not have come back to volunteer the information she released.

She added that she had made several appearances before the Georgina Wood Committee to testify on the cocaine issue. A worried Grace declared that she felt completely disappointed in government for the treatment meted out to her. If anybody’s assets should be frozen, it should not be hers, she argued. She stated that she had not received any correspondence yet about the freezing of her assets, and bank accounts.

Should she intend to take any action especially against the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) on the issue, she would not know where to start from because according to her, the organization is big.’

When she went to the bank last Monday to withdraw some money, she was told that her account had been frozen. Sounding desperate and helpless, she wondered aloud what she was going to do to survive since her company had been closed down a long time ago, saying with no employment for her, she would find it tough.

With the Police branding her an informant, she stated that nobody would trust her any longer, let alone assist her. Asibi therefore said she would consult her lawyers. When asked whether her husband, David Vasquez had another wife beside her, she said, that was not the issue at stake but the freezing of her assets and accounts.
