Govt sets up committee to review local govt laws

New Edubiase (Ash), Sept 12, GNA - The government has set up a seven-member committee to study the local government laws and suggest areas that need a review to ensure an effective local government system. Mr Kwabena Appiah-Pinkrah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi-Akrofuom and Chairman of the Parliamentary-Select Committee on Local Government, said the committee comprised MPs from the majority and minority sides and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment.

He was addressing the last session of the Adansi South District Assembly at New Edubiase prior to its dissolution. He said the move is one of the measures intended to improve conditions of service of members who would work in the various local government structures.

Mr Appiah-Pinkrah said the committee would, in October, embark on a fact-finding tour of all districts to find out lapses in local governance.

Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, the District Chief Executive, congratulated the members for the excellent performance that had moved the district forward in terms of development.

Nana Wae Ababio, chief of Amudurase near New Edubiase, commended the assembly for embarking on educational programmes in the district and pledged the support of traditional leaders. 12 Sept 06
