Gas celebrate Homowo in peace

Accra, Aug. 12, GNA -- The people of Gamashie on Saturday celebrated Homowo, a festival of thanksgiving that commemorates the end of hunger. The celebration was led by the Elders of the Nii Amugi Court. The leader of the Court, Nii Yalai Yartey led his people to sprinkle 'Kpokpoi' the unique festive dish, to God and ancestors around the environs to mark the day.

Numo Tete III, Chief Priest of the Gas, poured libation thanking God and their ancestors for granting them another year. He asked for God's blessing in the years ahead and prayed that the coming years should bring prosperity to Gamashie and Ghana. Numo Tete asked God to lead the Ga State to resolve the current chieftaincy dispute.

The four ruling houses of Ga Royal Stool that constitute the Dzase, the GaDangme Council and eminent personalities of the Ga Traditional Area had at a meeting decided that since the late Ga Mantse Nii Amugi II had not been buried, the Ga State was still mourning and, therefore, the festival should be celebrated in a low key.

The Homowo was ushered in on Friday with the celebration of 'Yeeyeyee¨', a festival of twins, triplets and other multiple births. 'Yeeyeyee' is a festival of cleansing during which twins are bathed in a special concoction after which they are fed with mashed yam and eggs.
This year's celebration drew a large crowd including tourists that lined up along the principal streets of Central Accra to watch the twins as they processed amidst drumming, dancing and singing. The occasion is used to settle family problems and offered opportunity to make new friends.
