Self-styled businessman defrauds

Mamponteng (Ash), June 30, GNA - A self-styled businessman who allegedly defrauded a widow of an amount of 60 million cedis under the pretext of supplying her with used refrigerators and cosmetic products from Italy has been arrested.

Gilbert Nsafoah, who was arrested at a hotel in Accra, had been on the run since December last year.

Nsafoah was granted bail in the sum of 60 million cedis with a surety to justify when he was put before the Mamponteng magistrate court on Wednesday.

He pleaded not guilty to defrauding under false pretence and stealing and will re-appear on July 05. Police Detective Sergeant De-Graft Armah Adjei told the court presided over by Mr Uuter P. Dery that Nsafoah in the middle of last year introduced himself as a businessman to Elizabeth Amponsah, the complainant, who resides at Fawoade.

He told the court that Nsafoah, who posed as a businessman and plies his trade in Italy, Hong Kong and other parts of Europe, managed to convince the complainant that she should sell her Mercedes Benz bus so that he (accused) could use the money to buy some used refrigerators and cosmetic products from Italy for her.

The prosecutor said after the complainant had given 60 million cedis being the amount realized from the sale of the vehicle to Nsafoah, he sneaked into her room at Fawoade, allegedly stole some vital documents bequeathed to her (complainant) by her late husband and absconded. Sergeant Adjei said Nsafoah was, however, arrested in Accra last Monday.
