Angry soccer fans besiege ECG over power failure

Bekwai (Ash), June 23, GNA - About 50 soccer fans besieged the premises of the Asante-Bekwai offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following a sudden power outage during the FIFA World Cup match between Ghana and the United States on Thursday. Power suddenly went off when the US scored the equalizer.

The fans stormed the ECG office and were just on the verge of vandalizing it when security men locked the gate. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at his office later, Mr Emmanuel Lumor, the District Manager of the ECG, said they were all at the office watching the match when the power went off.

The Manager said he called Kumasi where power is sourced and learnt that some parts of Kumasi, including Atonsu, Ahinsan, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Oduom, Fumesua and some communities along the Kumasi-Accra road, were affected by the power outage. Mr Lumor said power was restored 20 minutes later And appealed to people to exercise restraint when there is an outage. Assistant Superintendent of Police Kankam Boadu confirmed the incident and said his men were rushed to the ECG offices to maintain order.
