Voters register: IPAC has failed Ghanaians

Charlotte Osei, Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei, Electoral Commissioner

Dr. David Percy, of the defunct National Reform Party(NRP) says parties at the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) have woefully failed for allowing the opposition New Patriotic Party push forward with what he described as a fraudulent agenda on the voters register.

He blamed the other parties at IPAC for their refusal to put the NPP in check on their constant demand for a new register, when the argument have been flawed in many times.

“I’m disappointed by the parties at the IPAC, because they sit with representatives of the NPP and they develop consensus petitions, and right out of those consultations you see the NPP and their various front agencies carrying on with these nonsense – this fraudulent attempt to have a new register foisted on us, which was exposed which has now found its way under the name validation, which is just a back door attempt to raise the same issues that has been thoroughly trashed and shown to be nonsense, Dr. Percy said on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji programme Saturday.

For him, the attempt by the NPP and its allied agencies to still make a case of what he described as a non-existence issue on the voters register is a move set by the largest opposition NPP to cause tension in the country ahead of the November polls.

The EC has resolved not to undertake the validation exercise.

The Election management body said instead of the validation, it will clean the electoral roll using the provisions of the existing law which says that ‘When the register is exhibited, a voter can go and object to the inclusion of another person’s name by reason of being a dead person, foreigner, minor, having done double or multiple registration and not being of sound mind as provided for by the Constitution.’

Meanwhile, Ghanaian pollster, Ben Ephson has intimated that what is at stake vis-à-vis the validation is only “a back door way to having a new register”
