I am very sorry for my comments in Kukurantumi - 2nd Lady

Second Lady, Matilda Amissah-Arthur Second Lady, Matilda Amissah-Arthur

Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur has apologized to Ghanaians for comments she made in Kukrumantumi, for which she has received a lot of backlash.

She says her comments were to encourage the community to participate in providing the educational needs of their wards but have been misunderstood by many to mean disrespect.

The Second Lady during an event to donate computers to the school chastised the headteacher for asking for chalk when the government had donated computers to the school.

While presenting five computers to the Kukurantumi Presby School in the Eastern Region, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur blatantly rejected an appeal for educational materials from the headmistress of the school and accused her of being ungrateful despite major efforts by government to make them comfortable.

“How much is a box of chalk? I won’t give you chalk today, I won’t give you chalk tomorrow,” the Second Lady said.

However, the response from Ghanaians has been sharp with many calling on her to apologise, saying her posture smacks of insensitivity.

But speaking at the fortieth anniversary of the Jack and Jill School in Cantonments, Accra; the second lady said she was taken aback when the headmistress asked for a chalk after she had donated five computers and about 500 books to the basic school.

She said her comments didn’t go down well with Ghanaians and, therefore, apologies unconditionally for the unfortunate incident that day.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur’s advocacy and philanthropic works in education, particularly for children, cuts across the entire nation.

She has so far championed the construction of schools, libraries and ICT centers to virtually all the regions in Ghana.
