RE Project enrolls only one apprentice after four years

The establishment of Technical Apprentices Training in Technology under the Rural Enterprise (RE) Project at Adidome in the Central-Tongu District of the Volta Region has been bedeviled with low enrolment, our correspondent has said, resulting in equipment underutilized.

The District Manager of the facility, James Adeku, disclosed that since the opening of the facility four years ago, only one apprentice has been enrolled instead of the expected forty for a period of three years.

The Manager disclosed this to the Minister for Trades and Industry, Ekow Spio-Gabrah, who visited the facility as part of his 3-day tour of the Region last week.

The facility at Adidome is the second to be established in the Volta Region with the other facility at Kete-Krachi.

It is to help equip youth with relevant skills particularly in the area of agriculture. Though well equipped with various machines capable of manufacturing crashers, threshing machines and squeeze press machines, there are no human resources to take advantage of such equipment.

Dr Spio-Gabrah was disappointed about the refusal of the youth to enroll at the facility, calling on traditional authorities and opinion leaders to educate the youth – for whom the facility was set up – on its usefulness.
