PNC will prioritise agriculture – Mornah

National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Bernard Mornah has revealed that if the PNC, with Dr Edward Mahama as its presidential candidate, wins the November 7 polls to form a new government, agriculture will be the pivot of the administration.

According to him, expanding agriculture will generate more income and employment opportunities for the teeming Ghanaian youth, hence the premium it will be given by a future PNC government.

Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM hosted by Prince Minkah on Tuesday May 17, Bernard Mornah indicated that alongside the expansion of the agricultural sector, Ghanaians would be made to consume foods produced locally.

He said: “We want to grow our nation at a 10% per annum GDP through agriculture and that the best way to grow agriculture is that we should be a nation that feeds on what we ourselves have produced. …You can’t continue to be a cash crop nation producing for export; you have to consume what you produce locally.”

Citing China and Nigeria as some of the countries that were boosting their local industry by consuming goods produced locally, Bernard Mona said there was the need to emulate the steps taken by these two countries.

“We are going to ensure that we have expanded maize farming in this country. Farmers are going to be supported to grow maize. Poultry largely survive on maize and so the chicken feeds will be made out of maize and, therefore, as we are producing maize, there is already a market, which is the chicken industry, that will buy it,” he said.

“That will generate employment in that field.”
