Over 500 MMT buses broken down

Over 500 buses out of the total fleet of 1,079 for the Metro Mass Transit Company are off the road due to different mechanical faults.

The number of the broken vehicles implies that about 50% of the entire number of buses for the company are currently out of use.

The stunning development came to light when the Roads and Transport committee of Parliament paid a working visit to the state transport firm Monday .

Speaking to Starr News on the development, a member of the committee Samuel Ayepaye said the committee has have asked for a comprehensive report on the situation to enable them a take a decision on the way forward.

“ We went there and had discussion with the management, the MD was present. They have prospects and you can see the green light ahead but there are certain things that we sit up and do if we want the Metro Mass system to succeed,” he said.

He added: “ They claim having 1,079 buses but statistics show you that more than 50% of those buses are not on the road, whether permanently parked or partially parked or inactive or active. If you put them together, every day they route about 594 buses and that tells you that about half of their fleet is off the road and that is worrying.
