NVTI to get GHc10m annually – Employment Minister

Haruna Iddrisu, Labour Minister Haruna Iddrisu, Labour Minister

The National Vocational Training Institute has been earmarked to receive GH?10 million annually from the Youth Employment Fund (YEF) to beef up their operations in providing employable skills to the youth.

Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, who announced this on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, said the decision is aimed at reducing the growing number of unemployment in the country, especially among the youth.

The amount, he said, will be captured in the 2016 Budget and subsequent financial policy statements of the government.

According to him, the initiative forms part of the programs that would be rolled out in 2016 by the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

His response was in connection to a question posed by the NPP MP for Manhyia South on what steps the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is embarking on to finance existing youth training centers after wasting so much of the country’s resources on LESDEP and YESDEP.

The government through the Minister of Finance is expected to outline the financial regime of the YEA for the recruitment of 100,000 – 145,000 youth into different modules of the youth employment initiative.

One of the major functions of the YEA is to develop, promote and support the training activities for the youth to prepare them for employment.

To Mr. Iddrisu, once the funding mechanism is available, the Ministry has no course to complain than to deliver.
