Ghanaians embarking on intercity journeys will soon be required to provide some form of identification or personal details before they are allowed to board vehicles at the various bus terminals.

This is a new regulation soon to be implemented by the National Road Safety Commission.

The move, according to the commission, is intended to reduce the stress involved in tracing relatives of victims, in cases of road accidents. It is also to aid transport authorities in their investigations when the need arises.

Speaking to Kemini Amanor on the Starr Midday News, the Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission May Obiri-Yeboah said the initiative has been adopted and will be implemented by all West African countries not just Ghana.

“When you go to the lorry station you will give details about yourself, your telephone number or address and others, so when there is an accident or something happens we know your next of kin and who to contact.

“The GPRTU will take those details before you get on board long journey vehicles. It’s not just Ghana that is going to implement this, it has been agreed upon by all countries in West Africa. So we are first providing education to all citizens before the implementation is done,” she explained.
