NGO launches project to restore Yaya forest reserve

An NGO, National Forestry Forum - Ghana (NFF-G), has embarked on an ambitious project to restore the denuded Yaya forest reserve in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

This involves the free supply of tree species to farmers in five communities – Asuakwa, Amangoase, Ayigbe, Mallamkrom and Konsua, who have been allocated plots of land within the destroyed reserve to plant.

Mr. Kwame Asamoah-Dwumoh, President of the NGO, said a total US$42,000 would be pumped into the project within the next 18 months.

The funding would be provided by the United Nations Development Programme, under its Small Grants Programme (SGP).

Speaking at its formal launch at Ayigbe, he said his organization was determined to lead efforts at promoting sustainable management of the nation’s forest resources.

He said the lip service would have to stop, and that, everybody should get serious to stop the pillage of the forest and its resources.

He said the erratic rainfall pattern should send strong warning to all to be responsible and end the wanton degradation of the environment to check the growing threat of food insecurity.

“This is in our own interest and must act together to make things right”, he added.
