The prime suspect in the killing of the two policemen on the Accra-Cape Coast highway a fortnight ago, Eric Kojo Dua, has reportedly admitted to the shooting of the two unarmed peace officers.
Kojo Dua, who earlier claimed only to have killed Sgt Michael Gyamasi but denied shooting L/Cpl Awal Mohammed, made the confession as he assisted investigators to reconstruct the scene at Gomoa Buduburam in the Central Region yesterday.
A highly placed security source told The Chronicle that, Kojo Dua, the son of a deceased pastor disclosed having shot and killed the two, Sgt Gyamasi and L/Cpl Mohammed on that fateful afternoon, while at the scene.
His demeanor said to be remorseful, Kojo Dua allegedly told the detectives that he had still not come to terms with why he committed the heinous crime.
It will be recalled that on Wednesday August 28, 2019, at mid day whilst on motor check duty on that stretch, police personnel flagged an unregistered car to stop, but the driver ignored the lawful order and sped away.
Sgt Gyamasi and L/Cpl Mohammed chased the said car in the standby patrol vehicle and caught up with him at Gomoa Buduburam, some distance away.
Eyewitness account had it that during an altercation, the suspect fetched a pistol from his car and shot the policemen.
Sgt Gyamasi ran into a shop to take cover, but the gun brandishing suspect followed him and in spite of the presence of kids in the enclosed area, carried on shooting, hitting him in the head despite the Sergeant already taking cover on the ground.
L/Cpl Mohammed who took a bullet to the ribs was pronounced dead on arrival at the Police Hospital in Accra. Three suspects were picked up the same day following operations mounted in the Kokrobite enclave by police units armed to the teeth.
The prime suspect attempted to escape capture but was, in the morning of Saturday August 31, 2019, apprehended on the suspension bridge over river Volta at Atimpoku in the Eastern Region during a well executed operation to flush him out.
