EPA closes down Salinat salt company

Salinat Salt Industry, a Lebanese company at Kpone, has been closed down by the District Security Council (DISEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) until further notice.

The company is said to be polluting a stream with iodine that is used by some 40 farmers to irrigate their farms, which has led to the destruction of their crops.

A report was made to the Kpone Katamansu District Assembly (KKDA) and the District Chief Executive(DCE) of the area, Alhaji Anteyoo Tetteh, who discovered for the arrest of Ali Hijazi, Director of the company.

Alhaji Tetteh, speaking to BUSINESS GUIDE, said in order to settle the matter swiftly, the sector’s regulatory body had fixed a date to hear the matter.

It has consequently extended an invitation to the management of Salinat salt for a meeting.

Some of the farmers said they were glad the EPA had finally closed down the company, they called on the EPA to do the right thing by ordering the company to compensate them for their crops which had been destroyed as a result of the pollution of the stream, saying these cannot be quantified.
