EC fails to publish report on rejection of new voters’ register

The Electoral Commission has failed to meet the deadline it set for itself to publish the full report of the five-member panel that rejected demands for a new voters’ register in the country.

The Justice VCRAC Crabbe-panel after evaluating proposals from civil society groups and political parties concluded there was no need for a new electoral register as being demanded.

According to the panel, the arguments for a new register was “unconvincing” hence, cannot recommend the replacement of the current voters’ register.

No details and enough reasons were given as to how the panel arrived at that decision, which was announced by the EC on December 31, 2015.

Although the EC promised to publish in a week’s time, the detailed report of the panel for the benefit of the public, it has failed to make good its promise.

“The Commission will publish the full report of the Panel on its website- www.ec.gov.gh by 7th January 2016 for the benefit of the public,” the EC had announced.

However, checks by tv3network.com [by the time of this report] revealed no such publication has been made on the official website of the EC. The latest publication on the site as at Friday 7:06 AM was the full report titled: "Request from the New Patriotic Party for a new register the Electoral Commission's position" dated December 30, 2015. It is unclear what might have necessitated the delay in publishing the report which has since the announcement, caused some level of disaffection.
