EC denies deleting NPP members from voters' register

The Electoral Commission as denied strongly allegations of erasing some New Patriotic Party [NPP] members from the voters' register as claimed by their party’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, Samuel Pyne.

According to Sam Pyne, the EC has deliberately deleted supporters of the NPP who did not register with National Health Insurance (NHIS) cards from the system including some constituency executives of the party.

He wondered why the EC is using the exhibition exercise as a strategy to clean the bloated voters’ register.

But Head of Communications for the commission, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu stated emphatically on NEAT FM’s morning show 'Ghana Montie' that “the EC has not deleted any NPP supporters from the register.”

“How possible can the EC know that this person in the register is party A or party B. So can all of us at the commission go one way to delete only NPP members in the register? There’s no truth in the allegation,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye.

The EC on Monday July 18, 2016 began an exhibition and re-registration of voters who used the NHIS cards as a form of national identity to register ahead of the 2012 general elections.

56,772 names were deleted from the voters’ register upon a Supreme Court order.

The EC recorded low turnout in almost all the polling centers which have been attributed to lack of publicity by the EC and other agencies – however, Kofi Dzakpasu is very optimistic that the electorate will patronize the exhibition in the coming days.
