Asokwa Constituency communications director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is questioning why the Electoral Commission failed to conduct due diligence before announcing the appointment of Dr Karl Marx Arhin as member of the Election Steering Committee.

Edmund Kyei believes recent flaws by the newly appointed EC chairperson, Charlotte Osei, could adversely affect the credibility of the November polls.

The NPP communicator’s withering attack comes in the wake of the EC succumbing to pressure from pro-opposition groups to drop Dr Karl Marx Arhin, an NDC member from its Election Steering Committee.

The 10-member National Election Steering Committee is to ensure a smooth and peaceful 2016 elections. Besides the 10 members, the seven Commissioners are also members with Mrs Charlotte Osei, Electoral Commissioner, being the Chairperson of the Committee, while the Director of Elections will serve as a secretary to the Committee.

The Committee is to share ideas and harmonize activities of the Commission to ensure that there is adequate security before, during and after the 2016 election.

“The NPP is not happy with the way and manner the EC boss has conducted herself since her appointment. It is obvious that Mrs Charlotte Osei is not capable of organizing free, fair and transparent elections. This woman is simply not cut out for the job!

“That’s why Ghanaians should be concern about the conduct of the EC. Moving forward, relevant authorities must listen to our [NPP] calls and call her to order to ensure credible elections,” Mr Kyei stressed in an interview with this reporter.

He further accused Mrs Charlotte Osei of deliberately picking National Democratic Congress (NDC) affiliates from relevant institutions to man the steering committee.

Against this backdrop, Mr Kyei called for the immediate dissolution of the committee, stressing that “Ghanaians deserve better”.
