BECE leakages affects WAEC's credibility – Lecturer

A lecturer with Ashesi University, Dr Lloyd Amoah, has stated that the leakage of some papers in the ongoing Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) undermines the credibility of Ghana’s examination systems.

According to him, the development has the tendency to cast a negative shadow on certificates that emanate from schools in the country.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) on Wednesday announced the cancellation of five papers in the ongoing BECE.

The affected papers were the subjective test (paper 2) of English Language; Religious and Moral Education; Integrated Science; Mathematics, and Social Studies.

This followed the discovery by WAEC that those papers had leaked. The leaked papers have been scheduled to be re-taken on June 29 and 30, 2015, according to a statement by the WAEC.

Commenting on the development on Morning Starr Thursday, Amoah said immediate measures must be adopted to stop the malpractice.

“In many ways, it undermines the credibility of our national examination systems and the intellectual integrity of our students and the work that they do.

“If somebody presents some sterling grades, because of this recurrent problem, it is not far-fetched for somebody to raise questions about the genuineness of the work that has been done,” he said.

The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has taken over investigations into the leakage. In line with that, the head of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Ghana, Rev. Samuel Ollennu was questioned Wednesday by the BNI on the orders of the National Security Council Secretariat.
